I go through quite a bit of drugstore mascaras as I'm trying to find the best ones and since there are quite a bit, with new ones coming out constantly, my mascara stash seems to be growing endlessly. The last few I tried were from Maybelline and Essence, and I was feeling like giving another brand a go for a while so I picked up the Rimmel Extra 3D Lash Mascara.

The product description of the mascara says it defines, lengthens and adds volume to your eyelashes. Which is everything anyone ever looks for in a mascara. The Mascara wand is medium sized, making it great for your upper and lower lashes without causing a mess. I really liked the consistency of the product as I found that I always had just enough product on the wand, making it easy to apply smooth strokes on your lashes. I usually use 2 coats of this and it looks amazing.

While applying the second coat of the mascara, I tend to focus a lot on the ends of the lashes so I can give the illusion of longer lashes. My lashes are naturally black and thick, so I usually like my mascaras to give a nice lengthening look. It stays put all day and doesn't smudge, except if you apply water, which is normal considering it isn't waterproof. I've used it for a while and it doesn't clump or become uneven with the added layers, so for the price I'd definitely recommend you try it out if you're looking for a new mascara.

How to Transition from Relaxed/Damaged Hair to Natural Hair

Tips on transitioning from Relaxed/ Damaged Hair to Natural Hair

Natural hair is becoming more popular all over the world and more women are throwing away their relaxers and embracing their natural curls. There are obviously women who prefer texlaxed or relaxed hair, and up until about 2 years ago I was one of them. I found it a lot easier to manipulate and manage during the week and as such always laughed and refused everytime my mum suggested I stop using relaxer. But times change and people change their opinion based on new information, so in January 2015 I decided to chunk my relaxer and transition to natural hair.

If you want to know more about my story and my decision to grow out my natural hair, then I'll suggest you read my post on Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair. It wasn't easy and I did face a few struggles but it wasn't anything too difficult which I wasn't able to handle. And at the end, it was the best decision I ever made in regards to my hair. I'd really like to help someone who is stuck and deciding to transition or not, so here is a guide on how to transition long term to natural hair.

Say no to chemicals

The first step of your healthy hair journey is to get rid of all the harsh chemicals you have been using for your hair. Yes, brace yourself, go get all the packs of relaxer and box dye you have at home and throw them in the trash, or give them away. 

Tone down the heat

I know it's Autumn, but I'm not talking about central heating. I'm talking about all your heat appliances. If you're trying to achieve healthy curls, you'll have to stay away from heat to give your hair a break. You'll be tempted to use heat to merge your two textures, but there are lots of other ways to do that.

Moistrize Daily

Moisture is one of the most important things for your hair. Always start your day off by applying some water and leave-in conditioner and sealing it with an oil. Your hair will thank you.

Cowashing

I believe cowashing was what made my transition easier. This is when you use a conditioner to wash your hair instead of shampoo because conditioner doesn't strip your hair from all the natural oils like shampoo does. You can read my post all about Cowashing for more details. You'll need to experiment to find out how many days you can go before needing to cowash again. For me, this was about 3 days, after which I would notice my hair was a lot drier, so I knew it's time to cowash. You can use a special cowash conditioner or just regular conditioner like Tresemme Naturals or Herbal Essence Hello Hydration.

Deep Condition like your life depends on it

Deep conditioning frequently is just as important as moisturizing your hair. I would suggest you deep condition once a week to get your hair healthier and then you can switch to every two weeks. Use a deep conditioning mask such as the Dr. Miracles Damaged Hair Medicated Treatment or the Shea Moisture. Here is a post on some of the deep conditioners I used while transitioning and also my Deep Conditioning Routine while I was transitioning.

Give that hair some protein

Your hair is made up of protein and as such you need to add protein to your hair from time to time. You can prepare a DIY hair mask using Eggs and acovado, or use the ORS Hair Mayonnaise. Once every 3 months, you can give your hair a stronger treatment and use the Aphogee Two-step Protein Treatment.

How to Transition from Relaxed or Damaged Hair to Natural Hair

Find your go to hairstyle

Experiment with different hairstyles to see which is the easiest for you to do and gives you the best results. As your go on with your journey, you'll have to find your go to hairstyle at different stages. About 3 months into my journey, my go-to hairstyle was two cornrows at night which I could easily take out in the morning and wear it down or style it.

Try protective styling

Whenever you get tired of your usual styles, try a protective style like Box braids, Marley braids or a wig which you can wear for at least 2 weeks to give your hair a break. I did the Marley Twists myself and loved them so much. I can't wait to do them again this Autumn/Winter.

Don't pick a date

Some people think you need to set a date for how long you will transition, but I say otherwise. I think setting a date just puts pressure on you. If you have chosen to transition and not big chop, it is probably because you are not ready for a Tiny Winny Afro (TWA), so just let your hair grow and you will know when you are ready to cut off the remaining ends. When you reach a length you are comfortable with, you will happily take the scissors and cut off all the relaxed hair that is holding you back from being natural.

Stimulate hair growth

You're probably going to be excited once you see some sort of curls, and you'll want your hair to grow faster. The faster you'll reach a length you are comfortable with, the sooner you will become natural, so help it out by doing hot oil treatments and massaging your scalp regularly. I would also suggest taking Omega 3 supplements, and you can try taking Biotin but be careful as it causes breakouts for some people.

Be patient and let your hair do it's thing

Lastly and most importantly, you need to be patient. If you stress constantly about your hair and measure your new growth every month, it's not going to grow any faster. So just do what you can to get it healthy and just enjoy the ride. Transitioning to natural hair is an interesting experience and you don't want to miss all of it because you were constantly too preoccupied and stressing.

It has been such a long time since I did an OOTD post, mostly because I was battling with my acne, but a girl can only stay away that long. This weekend I dressed up in my favourite pair of White Distressed Dungarees from Zara, and once I looked in the mirror I had the urge to go do some outfit shots.

How to style distressed dungarees in late summer

I love wearing white in the Summer but tend to stain myself in the first hour of wearing it. Is there some sort of law that says the moment you put on a white items of clothing, plans change to include an activity where you just have to get stained?! Bolognese on my white dress? Yup, I'll take that. This weekend I was prepared for some sort disaster, but I got home disaster free. Yay for that!

I've worn these dungarees while on holiday in Finland with a jumper, which also looked amazing. But since it's currently cold in the evenings but warm during the day, I decided to try them on with a tank top. I'm not yet ready to say goodbye to Summer and all my pretty sandals, so I chose these Beige Suede Chunky Heel Sandals which I picked up from Klt Shoes this summer. They are the most comfortable pair I've had in a very long time. I can't wait to check out what Klt shoes has for Autumn.

Review: Scrub Love Original Lovin' Coffee Scrub

As someone who suffers from acne and acne scarring, Skincare is extremely important to me and I believe body/face scrubs are a vital part of any skincare routine. It's one of the products that penetrates better into your skin and helps deep clean your pores and get rid of all the dead skin cells, to leave your skin looking extra smooth and moisturized. I find that I use them more in the Summer since that's when I show off a bit more body. Tips on working out from home

I've always liked doing workouts to get my body toned whether it is at home or at the gym. I went through a period when I only worked out from home for about 6 months before finally joining the gym. Over the last couple of months I started training even harder and eating healthier in order to build a bit of muscle mass. I usually do a mix of gym and at home workouts, where I go to the gym 3 times a week and sometimes add a few extra workouts at home. If you want to keep your body in shape but don't want to pay lots to go to a gym, you can do quite a lot of exercises in the comfort of your own home. Here are some things I would recommend doing for successful workouts at home.

Create Space

An important aspect of any workout is to have enough space to do the necessary movements. You want to be able to jump, as well as lay on your back with enough space to spread your arms. If you can do burpees and kettlebell swings without breaking anything, I'd say that's enough space. 

Gear Up

Just like when you go to the gym, you'd be more motivated to perform your workout if you have some nice looking gymwear on and a pair of nice kicks. Gymwear is available at different prices and so many different styles. Workout videos/ Printables

In order for your workout to be successful, you need to be prepared. Depending on what you are trying to achieve, research some workouts which are targetted to help you get to your goal. You can find lots of printables and other motivational pins on my Stay Fit Pinterest board. Another easy way to workout is to follow youtube videos. You can check out Rebecca Louise or Fitness Blender to start off, or find others you like.

Equipment

Your workouts don't have to be expensive. You can begin with just a pilates/ yoga mat and do bodyweight exercises, and gradually get some additional equipment. I would recommend getting some weights and a resistance band, which are available at Decathlon or any Fitness store. 

Get rid of distractions

You need to be in the workout mindset and as such need to handle any distractions beforehand. Keep the kids busy with something, give the dog breakfast, put away your mobile phone {unless you are using a mobile app for your workout}. This way, you'll concentrate on your workout and will get the best results.

Music

If you're following printables as opposed to workout videos, you will need some music to get you in the mood. Compile a playlist of music which has good beats and drives you to push harder. 

Mobile apps

If workout videos or printables are not your thing, you can also use mobile apps to find/ build workouts. I've tried quite a few of these including Sworkit, Abs Workout, Workouts and more. These apps usually show you how to perform the specific exercise and some also do the counting, so you don't need to worry about timing yourself. They also have programs which you can tailor to yourself by selecting how many times and on what days you workout, and other details. Some apps require you to sign up while others are just download and use apps.

Get an accountability partner

Now this is something I don't use and recently just found out it's a thing. Basically, it's a family member, friend or social media contact who helps you keep track of your workout. Because the workout is done at home, usually you are only accountable to yourself which means putting it off is very easy, but if you have someone to push you, then the chances of performing your daily workout increase.

Autumn is slowly approaching, but I'm not ready yet. I say slowly because in Barcelona it is still warm and sunny and I can indulge a little more in beach time before it becomes cold. But before all that happens and because it's always Summer somewhere in the world, I wanted to share my thoughts on the Rimmel 60 Seconds Super Shine by Rita Ora in 'Roll in the Grass'.

I love pastel colours and mint has been one of my favourites for a few years now. You could probably tell from my blog design. Anyway, earlier this summer I stopped by the drugstore in search of a Gel Polish which doesn't require a UV lamp. I had previously tried the Catrice Ultra Stay and Gel System and that didn't work out very well so I thought I'd pick up the Rimmel Super Gel since I'd heard quite a few good words about it. Well, since I was in the drugstore already, I ended up picking a few extra things, including this gorgeous nail polish. Because who goes to the drugstore to just get one lipstick and comes out with just that, right?

The shade 'Roll in the Grass' is part of the Rimmel 60 Second collection of nail polishes which includes quite a few shades in collaboration with Rita Ora. As soon as I saw how pretty this mint shade was, I knew it had to be mine. The nail brush is large making the application extremely easy. The colour is quite opaque, but I still tend to go for 2 coats of the polish. It dries quickly but I've noticed that I need to give the second coat a good amount of time to dry properly if I do not want to have hair streaks on my nails the next morning. Nothing ruins a perfect manicure like going to sleep before it is completely dry. I've worn it quite a bit over the summer and my mani usually lasts about 3 days before it begins to chip. Which is not the 10 days as promised, but I'm yet to find a polish that lasts that long. The quality is really good and the range of colours is amazing, plus at 2 a bottle, you can pretty much get all the colours you want.

Travel Beauty {Natural Hair}

I'm really sorry for the lack of posts lately. Before my vacation, I didn't have a lot of time to schedule posts and was planning on working on my blog in the evenings, but I was having so much fun with my mum I just couldn't. I'm back now and working on content for the next few weeks so be sure to stay updated. Today, I'd like to talk about travelling with natural hair and what products I ended up taking.

This was my first trip since I cut off all of my relaxed ends and started rocking my natural curls, and I must say I was slightly worried. Most of my products are in jars and over the 100ml limit, plus I usually need quite a few products to get me through the week, but I knew I couldn't take them all with me so I did some thinking. I considered what hairstyles I plan to do and based on that selected a few products and tools to take.

Moisturizing my hair daily is extremely important as it tends to get quite dry, so water and a leave-in conditioner is a must! I didn't have any spray bottles I could take with me so I decided I'll just apply some water with my fingers. As my leave-in, I poured a bit of the Alter Ego Intensive Nutritive Leave-in Conditioner into a travel sized bottle I got from Primark and hoped it would last me for 2 weeks. Since I always seal with an oil, I decided to go for the Confume Argan Treatment Oil* as it was already available in a small bottle and I love the feel of argan oil on my hair. I've got a review on this, so go have a read if you're looking for a lightweight oil which leaves your hair super soft. To define my curls, my current favourite product is the SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, so I scooped some into a bottle and popped it into my bag. Lastly, to deep condition my curls I grabbed a sample of the Argan Dew Replenishing Hair Mask* which is the best treatment I've used in a while. Now I think I went a bit over the top with the hair tools. I took some hair ties and some hair pins for creating my daily hairstyles, a couple of small rubber bands for when I braid my hair at night, butterfly clips to help separate and hold my hair when working in sections, an afro comb {obviously!} and my trusty Tangle Teezer* which I use for smoothing down my hair. And obviously a Satin Scarf to protect my hair while I sleep. Not exactly the bare minimum but all tools I thought I would need.

There are obviously a few items I ended up not using and might not take on my next trip, but I wanted to be prepared. Did anyone else get nervous the first time they had to travel with natural hair?  How do you select which products and tools you take on holiday?
